9/10/19 - 1s vs Durham BUCS Match

The opening game of the season for York 1s today and we started well. A newly formed team showed great chemistry and moved the ball effectively. However, too much space was given to Durham, leading to a wonder strike from range beating Skye and finding the back of the net. York seemed unphased by this and our heads did not dip. We continued to dominate the game and battle, creating several great chances.

Our left winger Emma had a stunning debut for the university with several successful runs down the line. York were just lacking that final product. Excellent link up from the centre midfield out to the left-wing lead to lots of shots on target but no luck.

Our keeper Skye does her bit keeping York’s’ hope alive as she pulls off some insane saves after a wave of Durham attack and pressure. As well as the core of our defence putting in some insane tackles to keep Durham out. York concede a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box but a good defensive line and safe hands from Skye keep them out.

Pressure shifts again and York press on moving forward up the pitch. Some great play from the left wing with Emma delivering a great cross and then a shot from Becca that was blocked leading to a York corner and then a free kick. Our centre half Karli steps up and marginally misses the goal but still ramping up the pressure on Durham. A series of excellent forward moves leads to a scrap in the box and a penalty for York. Grace steps up but sadly does not convert after a great stop from their keeper.

Half-time and a frustrating battle continued for York. A sub made for York and Jasmine is on the pitch up top. Followed by a second sub at the back, on came Lucy McLuckie. Jasmine makes an impact and a great through ball is fed to her but shot goes just wide. York look well organised and keep pushing for the goal. A well-deserved equaliser eventually comes! An ace ball from Grace, our number 10, is fed through to Jasmine and we finally find the back of the net.

A slight lapse in concertation lead to a quick counter from Durham and they found the back of the net in a stroke of luck. York persisted and battled for the final few minutes, but it just wasn’t our day and the game ended Durham 2, York 1 at full-time.

An unfair result for York, where a new team deserved a lot more from the game. A positive battling performance to start off the season. Such a shame that the result couldn’t reflect that. We go again to Lancaster next week, hungry for a victory!
