It was a golden day in the home of the Geordies. First half fraught with controversy, a diabolical attack on Aimee Colbourne left our girls on and off the pitch in shock before a Newcastle goal was scored. The atmosphere of a physical game was set and we were ready with an answer. One of our ginger wingers, Emma, sets the pace with rapid responses down the wing - several chances from Jasmine only just go wide. Ellie comes on for Grace to play as our number 10, York begin to dominate the game. An exciting play in midfield gives Emma a chance to equalise after a pacey run into the box. Boom, 1-1! It’s not long before a belter from Jazzie Jasmino Lawton makes it 2-1 putting York ahead. Another substitute for York, Lucy McLuckie steps onto the field to replace Mary on left wing. Our back four continue to be strong with excellent clearances from Hannah; Sonya and Karita are battling hard on the left sending balls down the wing and through the middle. Faye Singleton is having a brilliant game, the Newcastle midfield have nothing on her as she works the ball round players seamlessly. Before you know it, a genius through ball from Aimee puts Jas through on goal - boom it’s 3–1. Skye’s steady hands keep York safe under counter attacks from Newcastle, playing especially well after awful challenges earlier in the game. Karli drives with the ball up field, all of the team is playing with a real flare and confidence after a shakey start in the first half.
An exciting attack on goal leaves Coach Jill and Captain Harriet on the edge of their metaphorical seats. Out of no where, Jas fires the ball into the back of the net - 4-1 York!!! An unfortunate counter attack leads to another Newcastle goal but York remain composed and finish the game well deserved winners. We love to see it.
